How to Make Play Dough

Now that the weather is beginning to change, you may need to start thinking of some fun inside activities, especially for a rainy day! We have the perfect craft for you that doesn’t even make a mess!

Play dough is one of the most fun indoor toys for kids of all ages. Play dough really helps with a child’s imagination. It allows them to create any shape, animal, people, nature, etc. Whatever they have in their minds they can create it! Additionally, play dough is super soft, squishy and does not stick! It can last for months in a zip lock bag, it is inexpensive to make, and you can customize the play dough with any colors you would like!

Not only is it fun to play with, but it is a fun process to make the play dough. So let’s take a look at how to make play dough!

This play dough recipe makes enough for 4-6 kids.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
  • Food coloring, optional
  • Quart sized bags

Step 1:

Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot.

Step 2:

Next add the water and oil. If you are only making one color, add in the color now as well.

Step 3:

Cook the water and oil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball.

Step 4:

Remove from head and then place inside a gallon sized bag or onto wax paper.

Step 5:

Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth.

Step 6:

If you’re adding colors after, divide the dough into balls (for how many colors you want)

Step 7:

Add the dough into the quart sized bags

Step 8:

Start with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it.

Step 9:

Knead the dough, while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together you’re ready to PLAY!

Once they kids are done playing with the play dough, make sure you store it inside bags to keep it soft. It will stay soft for up to 3 months.

A good tip for storing the play dough and keeping it fresh longer is to make sure you roll each play dough into a ball to store it in a bag. This will help keep it fresh longer! With that being said, just a few quick and mess free steps until you have the perfect indoor craft that will never get old!
