Importance of Taking Curriculum Outside

Here at The Learning Tree, we teach a HighScope Curriculum. In a HighScope program, teachers ignite children’s interest in learning by creating an environment that encourages them to explore learning materials and interact with adults and peers. We focus on supporting early learners as they make decisions, build academic skills, develop socially and emotionally, and become part of a classroom community.

One part of Highscope Curriculum that we love is the importance of taking the curriculum outdoors. The outdoors similarly provides amazing platforms for curriculum and planning based on children’s interests. Being outside provides children with more choices of how they may want to explore certain materials. Some parts of our curriculum that we love to explore outside include; literacy, technology, math, social studies, etc.

Here are some of the ideas that we like to remind our teachers on how to take curriculum outdoors:

  • Bring Baskets and Manipulatives outside
  • Be a partner in play during outdoor experiences
  • Grab those water cups!
  • If enjoying meals or snacks outside bring the 3 step cleaning process with you
  • Bring sunscreen to reapply
  • Find something in nature!
  • HAVE FUN!
